MINUTES - ACA STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, Sunday, January 24
I. Meeting called to order by Tommy Norris at 3:35
II. Roll Call:

III. Minutes of August, 2009 (Nashville) meeting

IV. Reports:
A. Tommy indicated that he would not be affiliated with Eastern
Kentucky University in the future, and that the corrections
program at EKU was iffy.
B. Poster session for January conference: Cancelled because of lack
of student papers.
C. SAC Homepage: Jim announced that it was up-and-running, and that
the NIU-ACA student chapter could fund it for another year.
More input from ACA chapters was needed for content.
D. New Chapters: Rich announced that Westwood had not completed its
paperwork on time for approval; Eric announced that Ivy Tech
Community College in Terre Haute was a new chapter.
E. Gloria reported that there is over $1,000 in the Student
Poster Program account that NAAWS maintains for the SAC.
V. Old Business
A. Student poster session:
1. It was moved to hold the student poster session once a year
at the ACA summer conference instead of twice a year (approved
by consesus
2. It was moved to give posters that did not take a prize a
certificate for honorable mention, if worth, to provide
with recognition for their contributions.
B. SAC Marketing and publicity: Action deferred until Chicago,
but Rich, Eric and Jim will try to contact area schools
C. SAC Recruitment: Consensus that more needs to be done with
SAC members to reach out to other schools across the country.
VI. New Business
A. 2010 Summer Conference (Chicago): Jim and Eric are on the local
Host Committee and will try to enhance a student presence on
the committee
B. CAMA Conference: Jim announced that CAMA was actively reaching
out to students to integrate the ethos of "understanding
corrections begins with understanding standards," and explore
ways to integrate this ethos into college classes as a
way to expand students' experience for employment, internships,
and other activities relevant to the issues. Jim and David
Taylor (Director of CAMA) published several pieces for CAMA's
newsetter (posted on the acastudents.org homepage as well)
C. Workshop proposals for summer (Chicago) conference: None. The
Monday (January 25) deadline could not be met.
D. Gloria's proposed exploring with ACA the possibility of issuing
affiliate status certificates to student chapters.
E. January (2011) ACA conference in San Antonio: A reminder was
to start thinking about the conference (workshops, other
activities) and bring the ideas to the summer conference.
F. SAC Alumni Status (proposed by Barbara Zaitzow): Find ways to
integrate former memebers of student chapters into ACA
conferences. Supported in principle, but deferred until
Chicago meeting to work out details.
G. Election of new ACA-SAC chair: Because previous officers indicated
that they were unable to continue to serve, Eric Hoch was
nominated as the new SAC chair. Unanimous approval.
