Students MUST be a member in good standing of NIU-ACA to participate in the
NIU-ACA prison trips or attend conferences.
The ACA convention in January will be in Tampa, Fla.
We hope to take some students from our sibling chapter, UIC, from NIU,
and from a few other Chicago-area schools and meet with students from
other schools across the country.
This is an excellent opportunity to hear some interesting sessions, meet
profesionals in criminal justice, and hang out with students from other
chapters. There is a POSTER SESSION, in which students present their
work in friendly confines (a large room with a poster of a paper they've
written and people stop by to discuss it--it's fun!). This is a good
experience, and worth attending.
COSTS:
Registration: Expected to be about $50 per person.
Airfare: Southwest currently has fares for about $180, roundtrip.
Rooms: With doubling and tripling, estimated to be around $95 per person per
night (doubling up). Triples are cheaper. We will try to find cheaper
rooms.
Most of us go on a Saturday and come back on Tuesday evening, for a three
night stay.
WHY GO?
The conferences are twice a year, with 5,000-7,000 people attending from across
the U.S., Canada, and internationally. It's a good chance to meet people
and learn a lot about all the aspects of corrections, probation/parole,
rehabilitation, substance abuse/intervention, and many other topics.
If you're interested in corrections, law enforcement, and related areas,
this is a way to learn more about them.
